How to start girls wrestling
Back when we were first getting into wrestling 2021 it was not easy. We first looked up our local area to see if there was a club. Besides the limited information on the high school boys team there was nothing. Next we searched the nearby towns for mat clubs and found one 20 miles away. We went down and sat through a humid boys practice to speak with the coach. Our luck would have it, that coach wasn't there that night, instead we ended up with a phone number. The phone # didn't work and it would be a full year by the time we got back around to finding a club to practice. Nobody should have to miss a full year because it's hard to get information on girl's wrestling.
Find a local wrestling club
How to find a local girls wrestling club.
The easiest way is to go to the mat https://www.themat.com/membership/athletes/find-a-club and put in your zip code. If there are no girls clubs listed in your are often times the boys clubs include girls.
Private wrestling clubs
If a local club doesn't exist or has limited practice partners, a private wrestling club could be a good value for you. Locally in Utah, we have Sanderson and Champions wrestling clubs. These clubs generally cost more than school run clubs. You are committed to be at all the practices.
Buy USA/wrestling membership
How to buy a membership
You will need a USA wrestling membership to practice at most clubs, and to participate in competitions.
Folkstyle membership: Folkstyle is the style girls participate in high school.
Freestyle membership: Women's college wrestling is freestyle.
Both have their benefits. Depends on what your goals are. Aspen has been most successful with freestyle.
Finding tournaments
Finding tournaments may be the trickiest part of all.
